VIKING BASEBALL 2002
AUGUSTANA (26-22, 11-9 NCC) is the No. 3 seed in the
North Central Conference tournament beginning Thursday
in Omaha, Neb.
The Vikings play No. 2 seed Minnesota State University,
Mankato (26-14, 13-7) at 5:00 p.m. in the first-round
of the double elimination tournament. The University
of Nebraska-Omaha (32-13, 14-4), the No. 1 seed, takes
on No. 4 South Dakota State University (21-21, 10-10)
at 5:00 p.m.
This is Augie's first appearance in the NCC tournament
since 1997.
THE VIKINGS earned a berth in the conference tournament
by splitting a four-game series with Mankato and Saint
Cloud State University last weekend at Ronken Field.
Mankato took the first game of Friday's doubleheader,
9-5. The Mavericks pounded out 14 hits. For Augie,
Phil Lang went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Andy
Salmela drove in two runs while Ryan Dunlavey and
Doug Groebner each stroked a double.
The Vikings came back to win the second game, 3-2.
Doug Groebner's sacrifice fly in the last of the eighth
inning scored Salmela with the winning run. Dunlavey's
two-run triple tied the game in the seventh inning.
Sam Everson collected a double. Owen Hoegh pitched
7 2/3 innings and yielded nine hits while striking
out seven.

Saint Cloud blanked Augie,
13-0, in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader. Scott
Harden had two of Augie's four hits, while Salmela
and Adam Waldorf each had one.
The Vikings collected 11 hits to win the second game,
7-6. Augie trailed, 6-5, heading into the eighth inning.
Dunlavey ripped a solo home run to lead off the inning,
and Brad Bornhorst followed with a solo blast with
two out to settle the issue. Salmela also homered,
Matt Suby was 2-for-4 with a triple, and Bornhorst
and Doug Groebner each had a double. Bornhorst was
3-for-4.

THE VIKINGS' Owen Hoegh has
set a school record for strikeouts in a season with
62.
Doug Groebner has set the Augustana career record
for runs scored with 153.
Andy Salmela has set the Augustana career record for
doubles with 40. He owns the career record for RBIs
with 145. He also has the career record for hits with
184.
The Vikings set the school record for most NCC wins
in a season with eleven.
Brad Bornhorst has set the career record for home
runs with 25.

JEFF HOLM is in his first year as AugustanaĂs head coach. He succeeds
Brett McCabe, who resigned in August, 2001, to accept an assistant
coaching position at the University of Kanas.
Holm, a native of Brookings, S.D., was the head baseball coach
and a member of the Admission Office recruiting staff at Millikin
University in Decatur, Ill., for three years. He led Millikin to
back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2000 and 2001, and was named Coach
of the Year in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
He played baseball at Minnesota State University, Mankato and later
taught and coached in Watertown, S.D. He completed his masterĂs
degree at South Dakota State University in 1997, and served as an
assistant coach at SDSU in 1997 and 1998.
