VIKING BASEBALL 2002

AUGUSTANA (26-24, 11-11 NCC) lost to Minnesota State University, Mankato and to South Dakota State University in the North Central Conference tournament played last weekend in Omaha, Neb..

Mankato scored five runs in its last two at-bats to downthe Vikings in the first round, 7-4. Ryan Dunlavey and Doug Groebner ripped solo home runs for the Vikings, who held a 3-2 lead after six innings. Scott Harden had a two-run single, while Sam Everson doubled.

SDSU pounded out 17 hits and exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning and eliminated the Vikings, 17-6. Phil Lang doubled for Augie and drove in two runs. Doug Groebner doubled and drove in three runs. Everson was 2-for-5.

AUGIE left-handed pitcher Owen Hoegh set a school record for strikeouts in a season with 65.

Doug Groebner has set the Augustana career record for runs scored with 156.

Andy Salmela has set the Augustana career record for doubles with 40. He owns the career record for RBIs with 145. He also has the career record for hits with 185.

Brad Bornhorst has set the career record for home runs with 25.

The Vikings set a school record for most NCC wins in a season with 11. They finished fourth in the league.

The 26 wins this season is the third best in Augie history. The Vikings won 31 games in 2000 and 27 in 1994.

Augie was issued a school record 240 walks this season.

The Vikings turned a school record 42 double plays in 2002.

JEFF HOLM completed his first year as Augustana's head coach. Holm, a native of Brookings, S.D., was the head baseball coach and a member of the Admission Office recruiting staff at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., for three years. He led Millikin to back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2000 and 2001, and was named Coach of the Year in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. He played baseball at Minnesota State University, Mankato and later taught and coached in Watertown, S.D. He completed his master's degree at South Dakota State University in 1997, and served as an assistant coach at SDSU in 1997 and 1998.
