Baseball Fans Are Invited to Augustana Night at the Canaries

Augustana Night at the Sioux Falls Canaries

Augustana University will celebrate its 2018 National Championship baseball team at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, with Augustana Night at the Sioux Falls Canaries game. The event will feature an evening of baseball and fun for students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and community supporters. The Canaries will take on the Gary SouthShore RailCats at The Birdcage (1001 Northwest Ave.).

Multiple drawings for scholarships to Augustana will be offered that evening to those attending the game. Children ages 5-18 and current AU students are eligible for those scholarships.

Whether or not you tailgate with your friends in the parking lot of the stadium before entering, don't miss the national anthem, which will be sung by The Augustana Choir at the start of the game.

Special appearances that night will include the following.

  • AU’s 2018 DII College World Series Champion student athletes and Coach Tim Huber.
  • AU alumnus Mel Antonen '79, reporter covering Major League Baseball for, the Mid Atlantic Sports Network (MASN-TV) and Sirius-XM Radio. Before working at USA Today for 24 years (1986-2010), he was a sportswriter and news reporter for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. He played Legion baseball at Bryant and amateur baseball at Lake Norden and Renner. Mel joins his dad, Ray, in the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame.
  • AU alumnus Laurel Prieb '77, Major League Baseball vice president for special projects and scorekeeping. Prieb has spent nearly forty years in Major League Baseball. Prior to his current position, he was with the Milwaukee Brewers for fourteen years, most recently as the club’s Vice-President of Corporate Affairs. Prieb started his baseball career as the Traveling Secretary with the Minnesota Twins before working for the Brewers.
  • Ole and Cagey, mascots for the AU Vikings and Sioux Falls Canaries, respectively.

The opening pitch will be thrown by President Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.

Student tickets are free and everyone else pays a reduced ticket price of $5 at Upgraded seats are also available for $10. Tickets reserved online will be preassigned by the Canaries ticket office and will be available at the will-call window the night of the game.
