Augie students Present Session at Dakota Conference

SIOUX FALLS – Five Augustana students are collaborating on an entire session for the 38th annual Dakota Conference, April 21-22.

Freshman Clarissa Thompson (Sioux Falls) is serving as moderator for the session titled, The Geography of Slavery.

The presenters are senior Laura Plowman (Sioux Falls), sophomore Kelly Goertzen (Woodbury, MN), and sophomore Christine Howard (Centerville, SD).

Plowman’s topic is A Statistical Analysis of the Geography of Slavery in Virginia.

Goertzen’s paper is Skilled at Rebillion, while Howard will address An Advertised View of Slave Women.

Sophomore Laura Sova (Sioux Falls) is the commentator.

All five students enrolled in Dr. Michael Mullins’ January 2006 Interim course, Red, White, and Black: the markings of a multicultural society. Students were required to analyze newspaper advertisements concerning slaves and indentured servants, and to discover what such advertisements might reveal about slavery and indentured servitude for the 18th century.

Senior Anna Amundson (Sioux Falls) is also presenting. Her topic, South Dakota’s European War Brides, is part of a session on military history.

The Augie students are among 80 speakers, from as many as 10 states and two European countries, addressing the theme of urbanization of the Northern Plains and other topics related to the region.
