Vice President Al Gore is Boe Forum Speaker

Al GoreSIOUX FALLS - Vice President Al Gore is the speaker for the Boe Forum on Public Affairs scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, in the Elmen Center.

Vice President Gore’s political career began when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976, where he served eight years representing the then 4th District of Tennessee. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984 and was re-elected in 1990, becoming the first candidate in modern history – Republican or Democratic – to win all 95 of Tennessee’s counties.

He was chosen by President Clinton to be his running mate on July 9, 1992, and served as the 45th vice president from 1993-2001.

Since his days in the House and Senate, Vice President Gore’s environmental record is unparalleled. His pioneering efforts to protect the earth’s ozone layer and to clean up toxic-waste dumps were outlined in his bestselling book Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit (1992).

His account of the consequences of climate change spawned the critically acclaimed documentary An Inconvenient Truth as well as its companion book, which instantly hit No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list. An Inconvenient Truth brings home Vice President Gore’s persuasive argument that we can no longer afford to view global warming as a political issue but rather as the biggest moral challenge facing our global civilization.

The Boe Forum series, sponsored by the Center for Western Studies at Augustana, was launched in 1995. The first speaker was Gen. Colin Powell, former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Secretary of State.

Vice President Gore’s address is free and open to the public, but tickets are necessary for admission to the Elmen Center.

All seating is general admission by section.
