SIOUX FALLS – Augustana College head football coach Brad Salem announced today two changes to his coaching staff.
Steve Olinger has been promoted to recruiting coordinator and running backs coach, while Austin Flyger has been elevated to a graduate assistant coach. Flyger will serve as linebackers coach.
Olinger had been a member of the Vikings’ staff for the past four seasons. He was a student assistant coach in 2002 and 2003 and was promoted to a graduate assistant coach in 2004. Olinger oversaw the Vikings’ recruiting efforts in December after former recruiting coordinator Casey Meile resigned.
“Steve did a great job this past recruiting season,” Salem said. “He took over the job in December and played a major part in our signing 29 kids.”
Olinger was a three-year starter at defensive back for Augie. A native of Emery, S.D., he graduated in 2002 with a degree in education with an emphasis in health and physical education. He currently is pursuing a master’s degree in education at Augustana.
Flyger was an outstanding defensive lineman at Augie and a four-year letterman. In 2003 he was named to the All-North Central Conference team and awarded Most Valuable Defensive Lineman honors. He is entering his third season with the Sioux Falls Storm and was a key contributor to the team’s 2005 United Indoor Football title season.
“We’re excited to add another former player to the coaching staff,” Salem said. “He’s helped us out the past couple of seasons as a student assistant, but it’s exciting to have him involved on a more full-time basis.”
