SIOUX FALLS – Brandon Barkus, recently appointed head coach of Augustana’s women’s soccer team, has been invited to serve as the assistant coach for the U19 Women’s Region 2 team, which competes in a four-team interregional meet February 9-12 in Carson, Calif.
Barkus, who has served on the Region 2 staff for the past five years, will assist John Carter, who is also the women’s head soccer coach at DePauw University.
“I am super excited to be working with such a high level of soccer players and coaches,” Barkus said. “This will be a tremendous opportunity for me.”
The interregional event will be held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. All four U19 teams will compete, along with the U16 and U18 national teams. Typically, at the conclusion of the event, 24 players are chosen to form the U.S. U19 Women’s National Team pool. From that pool, 18 players will be selected to the U19 national team.
Region 2 is comprised of 14 states, including South Dakota. Last summer each state sent 18 players to a regional camp. The Region 2 team was selected at that camp.
Barkus was hired as Augustana’s head coach on January 21. He spent the two previous seasons as the women’s goalkeepers’ coach at the University of Minnesota.
