Augustana Hosting Discussion on Open Government and Secrecy

SIOUX FALLS – A Sunshine Week national dialogue on open government and secrecy, Are We Safer in the Dark?, will be held Tuesday, March 14, at 7:00 p.m. in Kresge Recital Hall, which is located in the Humanities building on the campus of Augustana College.

The event is co-sponsored by Augustana College and the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

Portions of the previous day’s National Press Club program about open federal government and secrecy will be viewed, followed by a panel of local experts who will address state and local government issues. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Janet Blank-Libra, chair of the English and journalism department at Augustana.

Panel members include Sioux Falls attorney Jon Arneson, South Dakotans for Open Government president Chuck Baldwin, State Open Meetings Commission chair Vince Foley, Sioux Falls Public Schools Superintendent Pam Homan, State Librarian Dorothy Liegl, Minnehaha County Commissioner Anne Hajek, and Associated Press bureau chief Tena Haraldson.

This program is part of the national observance of Sunshine Week, March 12-18, to raise public awareness of the value of open government and the harm to citizens from excessive government secrecy.

The event is free and open to the public.
