SIOUX FALLS - The Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department (HPER) at Augustana College has added a major in Sport Management beginning with the 2006-2007 academic year.
The HPER Department currently offers majors in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Fitness Management, and Athletic Training.
“Since none of our current programs address the variety of skill sets recommended for success in the sport management industry, a Sport Management major was the logical solution,” said Sherry Barkley, chair of Augustana’s HPER Department. “The multi-disciplinary major would meet the needs of these students while offering another exciting option to our list of majors, and it would be the first such program in Sioux Falls.”
Barkley said the new major is targeted to students who have an interest in the business of sport but are not drawn to teaching or the scientific basis of exercise. She estimates 10 to 12 students will be in the program during its start-up year. Completion of the major would require courses in physical education, accounting, business, communications, journalism, psychology, and sociology.
