Ambassador L. Paul Bremer is Boe Forum Speaker

SIOUX FALLS – Ambassador L. Paul Bremer, former presidential envoy to Iraq, is the speaker for the Boe Forum on Public Affairs Thursday, April 6, at Augustana College.

Sponsored by the Center for Western Studies at Augustana, Ambassador Bremer’s presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Elmen Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Although admission is free, tickets are required and will be available to the general public on March 23 and 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Fantle Building for the Center for Western Studies on the campus of Augustana College. Tickets are limited to two per couple.

On May 6, 2003, Ambassador Bremer was named presidential envoy to Iraq, and in that capacity served as the administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority and spearheaded the coalition in building the new framework of Iraq. He accomplished his mission on June 28, 2004, when he successfully handed over power to the interim government of Iraq.

During his 23-year State Department career, Ambassador Bremer served as special assistant or executive assistant to six secretaries of state. President Ronald Reagan named him ambassador to the Netherlands in 1983, where he served for three years. He also served as executive secretary of the State Department and was President Reagan’s ambassador at large for counter terrorism.

Ambassador Bremer is one of the world’s leading experts on crisis management, terrorism, and homeland security. In September, 1999, Dennis Hastert, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, appointed him chairman of the National Commission on Terrorism.

In June, 2002, President George Bush appointed Ambassador Bremer to the President’s Homeland Security Advisory Council. He has also served on the National Academy of Science Commission examining the role of science and technology in countering terrorism and chaired a Heritage Foundation study, “Defending the Homeland.”

Ambassador Bremer is the author of My Year in Iraq: The Struggle to Build a Future of Hope. Within the past month he has appeared on numerous television shows including Dateline, The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and Meet the Press with Tim Russert.

The Boe Forum series was launched in 1995. The first speaker was General Colin Powell, former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Secretary of State.
