SIOUX FALLS – The 2006 Augustana College Summer Piano Festival will be held June 8-10 in the Humanities building.
The festival begins with Augustana’s 24th Piano Teacher’s Workshop June 8-9 and features Paul Barnes from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Katherine Faricy from St. Thomas University in St. Paul, and Christopher Hepp from the University of Kansas.
The workshop includes performances, lectures, and demonstrations for developing excellence in piano teaching. Registration is required for the workshop and is available for non-credit, or one hour of undergraduate or graduate college credit.
At 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 9, featured guest artist, Paul Barnes, will present a solo recital featuring works by Isaac Albeniz, Mozart, Philip Glass, and Samuel Barber. The recital is free and open to the public.
Hailed by the American Record Guide as “a magnificent pianist,” the San Francisco Chronicle as “ferociously virtuosic,” and “a riveting and sensitive player” by the Indianapolis Star, Barnes has been featured three times on NPR’s Performance Today.
He was featured on the November, 2004, cover of Clavier Magazine, and has recently performed in Jerusalem, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Greece, Serbia, Seoul, Vienna, Budapest, and major cities throughout the United States.
The festival concludes with the Fifth Biennial Lee Piano Competition on Saturday, June 10. The competition is held in honor of the late J. Earl and Clara Lee, two esteemed professors at Augustana. More than 70 competitors, ranging from ages 9 to 28, from across the United States will compete for more than $6,000 in prizes.
Preliminary rounds begin at 8:00 a.m. and the competition finals will be held at 6:30 p.m.
