Terrorism Expert to Speak at Nobel Peace Prize Forum

SIOUX FALLS – Augustana graduate Jarret Brachman, an expert on terrorism, will be speaking at the 19th Nobel Peace Prize Forum March 9-10 at Augustana.

Striving for Peace: The Impact of One, is the theme for the forum. In cooperation with the Norwegian Nobel Institute, five Midwestern colleges of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America sponsor the annual forum.

Brachman is a specialist in al-Qa`ida strategy. He serves as the Director of Research in the Combating Terrorism Center at the United States Military Academy, West Point. He teaches the Terrorism Studies and Advanced Terrorism Studies classes at West Point. He conducts research and lectures extensively on the topics of terrorism, al-Qa`ida strategy, militant Salafi thought and terrorist use of new media technologies.

He regularly advises government agencies on local, state and federal levels on counterterrorism policy. He is the co-author of "Stealing Al-Qa`ida's Playbook" and coordinator of the "Militant Ideology Atas." He is regularly cited on terrorism related issues in international newspapers and he has appeared on CNN and CNN International.

Before coming to West Point, Brachman served as a Fellow in the Central Intelligence Agency's Counterterrorist Center. He earned his bachelor's degree from Augustana in 2000 and his master’s and doctorate degrees in Global Governance Studies from the University of Delaware's Department of Political Science and International Relations.

The forum also features a video presentation by Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and recipient of the 2005 Nobel Prize for Peace.

A session titled “Norway and Peace” features Norwegian and US Ambassadors.
