Kin: The Trial of Carrie Buck is the true, tragic, and shameful story of eugenics and legalized sterilization in America. Barker’s play is based on a real account of the eugenics movement in America – legalized sterilization of less than perfect humans – which became “fertile soil” for the Holocaust.
There is a strong connection to today’s headlines, where parents have chosen to alter their child physically based on the child’s mental health and physical disabilities. The play brings up ethical questions found in many of these medical decisions.
The production is directed by guest director, Vickie Fuller. Dr. Julia Bennett of the Augustana Theatre Department portrays the older Carrie Buck. Other cast members include Kelsey Acers (Sioux Falls), Jillian Besemer (Blaine, MN), Molly Buyske (Shelby, MT), Will Dietzler (Fargo, ND), Coutrney Earll (Canton, SD), Andrew Erickson (Humboldt, SD), Sonia Halbach (Devils Lake, ND), Joseph Hallenbeck (Spearfish, SD), Alex Hartman (Sioux Falls), Nathan Hults (Glencoe, MN), Josh Schoenfelder (Iroquois, SD), Jan Schoeszler (Sioux Falls), Michael Stangeland (Westbrook, MN), and Bob Wendland (Arlington, SD).
On Friday, February 23, Barker will be speaking at a dinner prior to the performance. Following the performance, a panel will discuss the ethical issues connected to the production. Anyone interested in attending the dinner should call 274-5320. Seating is limited and tickets cost $25 for the dinner and show.
