Student Group Earns Public Relations Award

SIOUX FALLS – Augustana communication students earned a first place in the Minnesota Public Relations Society of America’s fifth annual Student Classics Awards. Winners were recognized at a banquet in Minneapolis.

The event showcased the best in the public relations field by area college students. Augustana competed against other chapters in the Upper Midwest Region and was awarded first place in the community and special events category for planning and promoting the Sioux Empire Adoption Fair.

“This is akin to winning for best picture in the Oscars,” said Dr. Michael Nitz, associate professor of communication at Augustana.

PRestige, Augustana’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, works with clients on communication projects, applying classroom knowledge to real situations. “All projects are planning and implementing communication campaigns that help a client meet communication goals and objectives,” said Nitz.

In the case of the Sioux Empire Adoption Fair, the Augie students helped develop the idea for the inaugural event. PRestige members solicited sponsors, obtained vendors, reserved the site, created news releases and radio spots, made posters, distributed brochures, assisted with logistics for the event, and conducted media contacts. The official logo for the event was also designed by an Augie student.

Augustana students involved in the project were Kelly Nyberg (Sioux Falls), Ashlee Wendt (Alcester, SD), Ashley Nissen (New Brighton, MN), Sara Litton (Fargo, ND), Elizabeth Fisher (Sioux Falls), Brian Boyenga (Ellsworth, MN), Jordin Mueller (Chamberlain, SD), and Marit Karbowski (Shoreview, MN).
