Dr. Richard Bowman, professor of religion/classics/philosophy and Humanities Division chair, has been selected as the Stanley L. Olsen Chair of Moral Values.
The Chair of Moral Values was established to provide leadership on campus in the areas of ethics and moral values by challenging faculty and students alike to confront value questions in our society, campus, and community. Dr. Bowman has a long and distinguished career at Augustana in his professional role in the religion department and as a campus leader.
Born and raised in Sioux Falls, Dr. Bowman attended Longfellow Grade School, Patrick Henry Junior High, and Lincoln High School. He enrolled at Augustana, majored in chemistry and mathematics, and graduated in 1971. He earned a Master’s of Divinity at Luther Seminary, and a Ph.D. at Union Seminary in Virginia.
Dr. Bowman has been teaching at Augustana since 1976. He is the author of a chapter in a book on character ethics and the Bible, and a journal article on the ethics of biblical criticism.
The Chair of Moral Values is named in memory of Stanley L. Olsen, professor of philosophy at Auguatana, who embodied and exemplified in his teaching the spirit that the Chair seeks to sustain and promote.
The three-year appointment is awarded to a tenured associate or full professor who enjoys a reputation for being an excellent teacher and scholar, and who has a personal and scholarly interest in questions of meaning and value. The Chair holder receives a summer stipend and a reduced teaching load during the fall and spring semesters.
