SIOUX FALLS – The art work of South Dakota artist Robert Aldern will be on display in Augustana College’s Center for Western Studies through June. The exhibit is entitled “Celebrating the Work of Robert Aldern” and features original oil paintings from his personal collection, working drawings, and photographs of his liturgical art found in churches across the area. Giclée prints of several pieces will be for sale.
A reception and gallery talk is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, 2007, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. The gallery talk will be at 5:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Renowned nationally as a master of liturgical art, Aldern rivets his reputation as a painter of the Great Plains with his luminescent landscapes. Aldern is a 1951 Augustana College graduate and received the Augustana Alumni Achievement Award in 1977. He taught art at Augustana College and the University of South Dakota. Since 1991 he has been artist-in-residence and director of the Center for Liturgical Art at Augustana. Aldern received the Governor’s Award for the Arts for Distinction in Creative Achievement in 1997, the Sioux Falls’ Mayor’s Award for Achievement in the Arts in 2000, and the Spitznagel Award for Artistic Achievement, Sioux Falls, in 1997, among many other achievements.
Aldern’s work will be on display in the Madsen, Nelson and Elmen galleries at the Center through June 30, 2007.
Permanent exhibits at the Center include the “Fantle Scandinavian Exhibit,” The Froiland Plains Indian Exhibit,” and the “Jim Savage Woodcarving Studio and Exhibit.”
The Center for Western Studies is located in the Fantle Building at 2201 S. Summit Ave., Augustana College. Hours are 8:00 a.m.-noon and 1:00-5:00 p.m. weekdays and 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The Center is closed holidays. Call (605) 274-4007 for more information – www.augie.edu/cws.
