SIOUX FALLS – Augustana College President Rob Oliver today announced the appointment of Dr. Mark Braun as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College.
Dr. Braun begins his new duties on August 1, 2007. For the past eight years he has served as the Associate Dean of the College at Gustavus Adolphus in Saint Peter, Minn.
“I am extremely excited and pleased that Dr. Braun has accepted our offer,” said President Oliver. “He will play a vital role as we progress toward our vision of becoming one of America’s premier church-related colleges.”
Dr. Braun earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and his Ph.D. in speech-communication at the University of Minnesota. He has been with Gustavus Adolphus College since 1990, serving in leadership positions for the past 13 years.
He serves on the Board of Directors for the Collaboration for the Advancement of College Teaching and Learning. He is deeply committed to the liberal arts, professional training, and to serving in Lutheran higher education.
“I believe that the healthy mix of liberal arts and professional studies is part of what defines Augustana as a college, and my vision is that, as resources grow, Augustana will continue to gain in reputation as an outstanding comprehensive liberal arts college,” he said.
From 1977 to 1988 Dr. Braun was employed in commercial broadcasting, and was a member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). He later served on the Board of Directors of the Broadcast Education Association in Washington, D.C.
He has authored a book, contributed to book chapters, and has had numerous articles published. He has authored guest columns which have appeared in several national newspapers and trade publications, including Electronic Media, the Baltimore (Evening) Sun, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, and the Dallas Times-Herald.
Dr. Braun maintains the rank of professor and has taught at Gustavus Adolphus, the University of Minnesota, Augsburg College, Minnesota State University, Mankato, and South Central Technical College in Mankato, Minn.
He served on many church, volunteer and civic boards in Mankato, including nine years on the Public Safety Civil Service Commission and more recently on Envision 2020, the community long-range strategic planning task force.
Dr. Bruan and his wife, Kristin, are the parents of five children.
