SIOUX FALLS, SD - Vicente Fox, President of Mexico from 2000 to 2006, and Marta Fox, a powerful voice for women’s issues and social responsibility, are the speakers for the Boe Forum on Public Affairs scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 1, in the Elmen Center on the campus of Augustana College.
Vicente Fox was elected president of Mexico in 2000, the first president to break the stranglehold the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party had held on the nation for seven decades. A charismatic reformer, President Fox is credited as playing a vital role in Mexico’s democratization and with strengthening the country’s economy. During his tenure, he succeeded in controlling inflation and interest rates, and in achieving the lowest unemployment rate in all of Latin America.
In his Boe Forum address, President Fox will discuss his business-centered approach to the development of Mexico, the future of the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and the opportunities available for international corporations in the region.
Marta de Fox has used the visibility afforded the wife of Mexico’s President to take strong stands on social issues. She has chaired numerous organizations that work on behalf of women, children, healthcare, and education. Prior to her marriage to President Fox, she served as his communications director as he rose from governor to president, and was the first woman to act as the federal government’s spokesperson.
In her Boe Forum address, Marta de Fox will challenge women to insist upon equal treatment. She will discuss the progress made and the road ahead in the struggle for gender equality in the modern world.
The Boe Forum series, sponsored by the Center for Western Studies at Augustana, was launched in 1995. The first speaker was Gen. Colin Powell, former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Secretary of State. Other speakers have included George H.W. Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev, John Major, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Queen Noor, Rudy Giuliani, and Al Gore.
The Fox’s addresses are free and open to the public, but tickets are necessary for admission to the Elmen Center. All seating is general admission by section.
Up to four free tickets per person for the lectures may be obtained by mailing a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the CWS Box Office, Augustana College, 2001 S.
