Augustana Student Named Goldwater ScholarNeil Patel

Neil Patel, an Augustana sophomore from Worthington, Minn., has been selected as a Goldwater Scholar for the 2008-09 academic year.

Patel carries a double major, biology and chemistry ACS, with minors in computer science, business, and mathematics. He is the son of Dr. Bharat and Gita  Patel of Worthington.

Patel’s selection from a field of 1,032 mathematics, engineering and science students nationwide is based on academic merit. A Dean’s List student, he is the 12th Augustana student chosen to receive the award.

Last summer he was involved in research with NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. In the fall he was awarded runner-up honors in the Sioux Valley Section of the American Chemical Society’s poster competition for his work with magnesium loss in space travelers.

Patel plans to pursue a Ph.D. in biochemistry and a medical degree with hopes to conduct research in biochemistry, and apply to the astronaut training program.  Future plans also call for teaching at the university level.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1956 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater.  Goldwater served 30 years in the U.S. Senate.  The Foundation awards scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in science, mathematics, and engineering.

Inspired by Lutheran scholarly tradition and the liberal arts, Augustana provides an education of enduring worth that challenges the intellect, fosters integrity and integrates faith with learning and service in a diverse world.
