Sioux Falls School District Honors Education Department

Augustana’s Education Department was recognized May 1 by the Sioux Falls School District as the Community Partner of the Year in the School-Based Mentor Program.

Augustana was nominated by Edison Middle School site coordinators John Hegg and Becca Dravland. Directing the program from Augustana are Sharon Andrews, associate professor of education; Evie Brouwer, assistant professor of education; Mark Hallenbeck, associate professor of education, and Steve Van Bockern, professor of education.

A write up in the Mentor Recognition Breakfast program stated: “It all started about 15 years ago when the counselors at Edison approached the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Augustana College with a plea for some students to serve as mentors. It went from the FCA club to students pursuing an education major who desired some hands-on experience. During 2007-2008, Augustana provided Edison with 99 mentors. The beautiful part is that many of these mentors not only fulfill their class assignment, but continue to mentor after their class is over – some as long as three or four years. Almost without exception, the hundreds of Augustana mentors who have appeared at Edison over these many years have been a very dependable, responsible group of young adults.”

In addition, Patty Grinsell, who works in Augustana’s Dean of Students office, was honored as an outstanding mentor. She mentors at Laura Wilder Elementary School.
