Eight of Augustana’s finest student soloists will perform selections from concertos and operas on Saturday, May 10, at 8:00 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
Selected from 17 students who auditioned in February, these musicians perform classical repertoire for solo instrument or voice and orchestra. Soloists will be accompanied by professional musicians of the South Dakota Symphony Chamber Orchestra, which includes the Augustana String Quartet and members of the Augustana College and Community Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Scott Johnson.
The evening will include movements from concertos featuring solos on organ, oboe, bassoon, trombone, saxophone and piano. Two vocal soloists will perform arias by Donizetti and Handel.
Organist Tim Gabriel (Le Mars, IA) opens the concert performing the third movement of Concerto No. 1 in F by Josef Rheinberger followed by Michael King’s (Sioux Falls) oboe performance of movement one of the Concerto for Oboe and Strings by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
The Concerto in B Flat, Allegro byAntonio Vivaldiwill be performed by bassoonist Christopher Haak (Urbandale, IA). Tenor Eric Wassenaar (Sioux Falls) will sing the Svegliatevi nel core aria from Julius Caesar by G.F. Handel.
Jason Roseth (Watertown, SD) will finish the first portion of the concert with movements two and three of the Concertino for Trombone and Strings, by Lars-Erik Larsson.
Nathan Sletten (Lake Mills, IA), saxophonist, will continue the program with the first movement of Concertino da Camera by Jacque Ibert followed by soprano Alyssa Nance (Sioux Falls) performing Quel guard oil cavaliere; So anch ‘io la virtue magica, an aria from Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti.
Maireid Kelly (Forest City, IA) completes the evening with the first movement of the Piano Concerto In Am, Op. 16 by Edvard Grieg.
The evening of concertos and arias is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the door.
