The Washington Pavilion Visual Arts Center and the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery at Augustana are holding a joint exhibition in tribute to the art and career of Robert Aldern, one of South Dakota’s most talented and
influential artists and educators.
The Washington Pavilion Visual Arts Center exhibition runs February 29-May 18. The Eide/Dalrymple Gallery exhibition runs March 6-April 20. A joint reception will be held Friday, March 7, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Visual Arts Center, and from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery.
Aldern is widely known for his liturgical art. Many churches in the Sioux Falls area feature his magnificent installations. He graduated from Augustana in 1951 and was a member of the art department faculty for three decades.
The Eide/Dalrymple Gallery’s portion of the exhibition, “Celebrating a Life in Liturgical Art,” focuses on this important aspect of his career. This exhibition assembles examples of Aldern’s liturgical art, pairing it with his preliminary drawings and final proposals from his earliest works to some of his most recent commissions. Complimenting Aldern’s paintings and drawings are photographs and banners of in situ examples that capture in a small way what it is like to experience Aldern’s work as a part of a carefully designed, vibrant worship environment. These photographs have been drawn from the Hovland Center for Liturgical Arts at Augustana College with new photography generously donated by Paul Schiller. This exhibition attests to not only Aldern’s lifelong combining of art and faith, but also the region’s commitment to quality liturgical art.
The part of the exhibition held at the Visual Arts Center focuses on Aldern’s landscapes and his secular figurative works.
“A South Dakota Original: Robert Aldern” has been made possible with the major sponsorship of Jerry and Mary Freeman, and Sheila and Jeff Hazard (Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation Fund). Additional support is provided by Paul Schiller and Raven Industries.
