“Transition of an Artist,” a show and sale by master ledger artist Donald F. Montileaux, is the latest exhibit at Augustana’s Center for Western Studies.
Montileaux is of Oglala Lakota ancestry and lives in Rapid City, S.D. Following in the footsteps of his forefathers, he has rekindled ledger art with his collection of striking images that capture the unique Lakota way of life. Montileaux interned under noted South Dakota artist Oscar Howe and also credits his personal friend and mentor, the late Herman Red Elk as his primary muse.
The ledger art that Montileaux creates is a traditional and time-honored form of art that has been a part of tribal history for centuries. The paper he uses is from ledgers that are dated from 1890 to 1940. His medium is very much like what was used centuries ago – prisma color pencil and India ink; he also creates work using acrylic on canvas.
Montileaux’s art is represented in many private and public collections. He has illustrated covers for numerous books, with his most recent cover Hundred in Hand by Joseph M. Marshall III. In 2006, he won the best of division and first place at the SWAIA Indian Art Market, Santa Fe, N.M., and best of show at the 2007 Artists of the Plains Art Show & Sale sponsored by the Center for Western Studies. He is also the author of the award-winning children’s book Tatanka and the Lakota People: A Creation Story.
A reception and gallery talk is scheduled for Friday, March 7, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The gallery talk begins at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The exhibit will be on display in the Madsen, Nelson and Elmen galleries at the Center through May 31, 2008.
The Center for Western Studies is located in the Fantle Building at 2201 S. Summit Avenue on the campus of Augustana College.
