SIOUX FALLS - Director Ivan Fuller and Augustana College Theater present "Painting Churches," a comic drama written by Tina Howe.
The play will be performed on the Edith Mortenson Center's main stage October 27-28 and October 31-November 4 at 7:30 p.m. To make reservations call (605) 274-5320. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $3 for students.
Gardner and Fanny Church are preparing to move out of their Beacon Hill house to their summer cottage on Cape Cod. Gardner, once a famous poet, is retired. He slips in and out of senility as his wife, Fanny, tries to keep them both afloat. They have asked their daughter, Mags, to come home to help them move. Mags agrees, and hopes to finally paint their portrait. She comes home, hoping that by painting her parents she can come to terms with them as well.
"I have often taught this play in my theater classes and gotten positive reactions from students about it," says Fuller, associate professor of theater and co-coordinator of Augustana's Theater Program. "It deals with a lot of issues students face, like going home again after a long period of absence, and watching your parents grow older and frailer."
Cast members are senior Charlie Nesdahl, Sioux Falls, as Gardner; junior Ann Lorenz, Urbandale, Iowa, as Fanny; and senior Amanda Johnson, Buffalo, S.D., as Mags.
Rebecca Hjelle, a junior from Bellevue, Neb., is Fuller's assistant director. Karen Butler, a sophomore from Monument, Colo., is the stage manager.
