VIKING VOLLEYBALL 2000

AUGUSTANA (30-4) Lost to Hawaii Pacific University, 2-15, 7-15, 6-15, in the title match of the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship on Saturday, December 2, in the Elmen Center.

The crowd of 3,307 set a record for the Division II championship match. It was Augie's first appearance in the Elite Eight and only the second time the College has hosted a NCAA championship event.

Hawaii Pacific finished the season with a 28-0 record, capturing the Division II title in nine straight games. Grand Valley State University gave the Sea Warriors their closest game, a 15-13 decision in the tournament's first round.

Senior All-America Debbie Sant'Anna paced Hawaii in its win over Augustana with 16 kills, seven digs, and two service aces. All-America Susy Garbelotti added 14 kills, 13 digs, and five block assists. She hit a team-leading .565.

Hawaii's All-America setter Nia Tuitele had 38 set assists and nine digs. Garbelotti and Tuitele return next year for the Sea Warriors.

Augustana senior All-America Lindsay Voss had 11 kills and 14 digs. Second-team All-America Lori Fossum had 11 kills, while Katy Peterson had 13 digs. Kari Peterson, Division II Player of the Year, had 35 set assists.

AUGUSTANA players named to the all-tournament team are Lindsay Voss, Katy Peterson, Kari Peterson, and Sara Larson.

Representing Hawaii Pacific University are Debbie Sant'Anna, Flavia Gabino, Nia Tuitele and Susy Garbelotti.

Also selected were Nesrin Seckin of the University of North Alabamna, Shannon Stroud of West Texas A&M University, Kathy Vis of Grand Valley State University, and Ying Xu of the California University of Pa.

NCAA DIVISION II CHAMPIONHSIP

COACH KIM SUDBECK-MARCIL (159-44) completed her sixth season as the Vikings' head coach. She has guided the Vikings to three North Central Conference titles, five straight appearances in the NCAA Division II region playoffs, one North Central Region championship, and their first appearance in the Elite Eight. She has been selected as the 2000 North Central Region Coach of the year. She was named NCC co-coach of the year in 1996 and 1997. She was a member of Augustana's 1991 national championship softball team and was named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team. She served as assistant volleyball coach at Sioux Falls O'Gorman High School, South Dakota State University, and Morningside College before becoming Augie's head coach.

STEPHANIE RADECKI is in her first year as Augie's assistant coach and instructor in health, physical education, and recreation. A graduate of Edinboro University, Edinboro, Pa., she was a graduate assistant coach at the University of North Alabama before joining the Viking staff. She was named Edinboro's Senior Female Athlete of the Year for 1996-97. She was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 1996, and was named to the all-conference first team for two years. She was chosen to the Atlantic Region Team for two years, and served as Edinboro's team captain. With Radecki in the lineup, Edinboro made four appearances in the PSAC playoffs, was the league champion in 1994, won two regional crowns, and made two appearances in the Elite Eight.

SENIOR outside hitter Lindsay Voss is Augustana's career leader in digs with 1,538. She is second in kills with 1,612, second in kill attempts with 4,016, and fifth in service aces with 153.

Senior middle blocker Lori Fossum is the Vikings' career leader in blocks with 458, and second in hitting percentage at .301.

Senior rightside hitter Katy Peterson is third in career digs (1,427) and eighth in kills (1,141).

Senior outside hitter Jenny Ganahl is sixth in digs with (1,117).
