VIKING VOLLEYBALL 2000

AUGUSTANA (26-3) hosts the NCAA North Central Region playoffs November 16-18 at the Elmen Center. Augustana is the No. 1 seed and South Dakota State University (27-3) is the No. 2 seed. Both Augie and SDSU drew first-round byes. The playoff schedule:

TOURNAMENT NOTES: Admission is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 K-college.

Augustana, South Dakota State University, and the University of Nebraska-Omaha tied for the North Central Conference championship with 15-3 records.

The winner of the North Central Region advances to the Elite Eight November 30-December 2 at a site to be determined. The North Central winner will play the Southwest Region champion in the first round.

There are 21 teams in the North Central Region. There are eight regions in the country.

This is Augustana's fifth straight appearance in the region playoffs and seventh overall.

South Dakota State University is making its third regional appearance, having previously qualified in 1997 and 1998.

The University of Nebraska-Omaha is making its 13th trip to the regional playoffs. The Mavericks won the national crown in 1996.

This is the 13th time the University of Northern Colorado has qualified for the region playoffs, but the first since 1995.

North Dakota State University has advanced to the region tournament for the 17th time. The Bison made the Elite 8 a year ago, losing to BYU-Hawaii in the quarter-finals.

Minnesota-Moorhead, champion of the Northern Sun Conference, is making its first region appearance.

LAST WEEKEND Augie capped the regular season by defeating the University of South Dakota and Morningside College on the road.

The Vikings beat USD 16-14, 15-6, 15-8. Lindsay Voss had 15 kills and nine digs. Lori Fossum had 10 kills. Katy Peterson 14 digs, and Kari Peterson 40 set assists.

Augie defeated Morningside 15-4, 15-8, 15-17, 15-7. Voss registered 19 kills, Sara Larson 13, and Katy Peterson 12. Peterson also had 22 digs, while Kari Peterson posted 53 set assists.

IN THE FINAL conference statistics, Augustana is first in hitting percentage at .280, kills at 17.67 a game, assists at 15.83 a game, and digs with 21.73 a game.

Lori Fossum is first in hitting percentage at .361, and Kari Peterson in assists with 14.49 a game. Lindsay Voss is fourth in kills at 4.83 a game and seventh in hitting percentage at .278. Sara Larson is eighth in hitting percentage at .277.

AUGUSTANA SENIOR Lori Fossum has been named to the 10-member 2000-2001 North Central Conference All-Academic Volleyball Team.

Seniors Jenny Ganahl and Katy Peterson, and junior Kari Peterson received honorable mention.

CAPTAINS for the 2000 team are Lindsay Voss, Lori Fossum, Jenny Ganahl, and Katy Peterson.

NCC STANDINGS

COACH KIM SUDBECK-MARCIL (155-43) is in her sixth season as the Vikings' head coach. She has guided the Vikings to two North Central Conference titles and four straight appearances in the NCAA Division II region playoffs. She was named NCC co-coach of the year in 1996 and 1997. She was a member of Augustana's 1991 national championship softball team and was named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team. She served as assistant volleyball coach at Sioux Falls O'Gorman High School, South Dakota State University, and Morningside College before becoming Augie's head coach.

STEPHANIE RADECKI is in her first year as Augie's assistant coach and instructor in health, physical education, and recreation. A graduate of Edinboro University, Edinboro, Pa., she was a graduate assistant coach at the University of North Alabama before joining the Viking staff. She was named Edinboro's Senior Female Athlete of the Year for 1996-97. She was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 1996, and was named to the all-conference first team for two years. She was chosen to the Atlantic Region Team for two years, and served as Edinboro's team captain. With Radecki in the lineup, Edinboro made four appearances in the PSAC playoffs, was the league champion in 1994, won two regional crowns, and made two appearances in the Elite Eight.
