2000 CROSS COUNTRY
AUGUSTANA'S Julie Gifford, a freshman from Balaton, Minn., is the only Viking
runner qualified to compete in the NCAA Division II national championships November
18 in Pomona, Calif.
Gifford finished 15th at the North Central Region championships November 4
at the Fort Hays State University course in Hays, Kan. Gifford posted a time of
22 minutes, 40 seconds for 6,000 meters. A total of 145 runners finished the course.
Augustana was ninth in the team standings. The top six teams qualified for the
nationals.
The Augustana men finished sixth in the team standings. The Vikings missed
qualifying for national competition by three points. A total of 140 runners completed
the 10,000-meter course.

AUGUSTANA COACH Tracy Hellman is in his first season as the Vikings' head
coach. He is a native of Redfield, S.D., and a graduate of the University of Sioux
Falls. He joined the Augie staff in January, 2000, as the interim distance coach.
Before returning to Sioux Falls, he was a graduate assistant coach at Humboldt
State University in Arcata, Calif.
