VIKING FOOTBALL 2000

AUGUSTANA (3-2, 1-2 NCC) hosts North Dakota State University (5-0), 3-0) in North Central Conference action on Saturday, October 7. Game time for the Viking Days encounter is 1:00 p.m. at Howard Wood Field.

THE VIKINGS and NDSU are meeting for the 55th time. NDSU leads the series 40-12-2. A year ago the Vikings were held to a dozen first downs and 269 total yards in falling to the Bison in the Fargodome 30-14. Eric DeGraff passed for 163 yards and Mike Herman for 98. Ryan Nodland had five catches for 60 yards.

LAST WEEK Augustana turned the ball over three times and was limited to 296 yards of offense by the University of South Dakota as the Coyotes downed the Vikings 15-10 in NCC play in the DakotaDome. Senior quarterback Eric DeGraff completed 19 of 38 passes for 222 yards and was intercepted twice. Augie could generate just 74 yards on the ground with senior fullback Ed Schumann leading the way with 48 yards in 10 carries. Junior linebacker Joe Evenson sparked the defense with 10 tackles. Roman Evans had a pass interception.

North Dakota State remained undefeated by edging No. 8 North Dakota 16-13 in the Fargodome. Lamar Gordon ran for 127 yards and Aaron Pederson kicked three field goals.

BOB BABICH (30-9) is in his fourth season as NDSU's head coach. His team is ranked third in the Division II national poll and second in the North Central Region. After the first three weeks of the conference schedule, the Bison were leading the league in scoring offense and rushing offense. They were second in scoring defense, passing defense, rushing defense, total offense, and total defense. The Bison have one of the league's top rushers in junior Lamar Gordon.

VIKING UPDATE can be heard during the halftime show throughout the season. This week's guest is Perry Ford, Augustana's men's basketball coach.

VIKING CAPTAINS for the 2000 campaign are linebacker Derik Budig, quarterback Eric DeGraff, defensive lineman Joe Quinn, and offensive lineman Ryan Stadum.

SENIOR quarterback Eric DeGraff is Augustana's career leader in touchdown passes with 55. He is also the career leader in total offense (8,274), passing yards (7,679), pass completions (670), and passing attempts (1,121).

JUNIOR wide receiver Matt Holmlund holds the Augustana career record for touchdown receptions (21) and is the Vikings' career leader in receptions with 166. He has caught nine touchdown passes this year and needs one more to tie the single season record.

JIM HEINITZ (59-76-1) is in his 13th season as Augustana's head coach. He was named North Central Conference Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1992. The 1992 season is among the most memorable in Augustana athletic history as the Vikings posted an 8-3 record after going winless in 1991. The South Dakota Sportswriters Association named Heinitz Men's College Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1992, and he was selected the Kodak College Coach of the Year in Region Four in 1988. Heinitz served three years as Augie's offensive line coach before being named head coach in 1985. He resigned to enter private business after the 1992 season, but returned to Augustana in January, 1996. In 1988 and 1989 Augustana made its only appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs. During the Heinitz years the Vikings have had three eight-win seasons. A two-time All-NCC linebacker at South Dakota State University, Heinitz coached football at the University of Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls Washington High School, Sioux Falls Lincoln High School, and Rapid City Stevens High School before coming to Augie. Jim and his wife, Becky, have three childrenÑStacy Scholten, Adam, and Heather.
