VIKING FOOTBALL 2000

AUGUSTANA (4-3, 2-3 NCC) hosts Minnesota State, Mankato (2-5, 2-3) in North Central Conference action Saturday, October 21. Game time is 12:00 p.m. at Howard Wood Field.

THE VIKINGS and Mavericks are meeting for the 31st time. Minnesots State holds a 16-14 advantage. A year ago, Augustana tied a school record with 34 first downs on the way to a 38-21 win at Blakeslee Stadium in Mankato, Minn. Augie finished with 526 yards. Quarterback Eric DeGraff completed passes to seven different receivers and finished 27-for-40 for 294 yards and a touchdown.

LAST Saturday senior quarterback Eric DeGraff completed 21 of 30 passes for 351 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Vikings past Morningside College 42-14 at Roberts Stadium in Sioux City, Iowa. DeGraff, who was not intercepted, tossed touchdown passes of six and 75 yards to junior wide receiver Matt Holmlund, and 12 yards to junior wide receiver Ryan Nodland.

Redshirt freshmen Ryan Edwards and Ed Whiting sparked the ground game, which generated 132 yards. Edwards rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown in 13 attempts, while Whiting had 33 yards and two touchdowns in eight carries.

Holmlund finished the contest with eight catches for 133 yards, and Nodland had eight for 131 yards.

Junior linebacker Joe Evenson had an outstanding afternoon with seven tackles (six for loss), three quarterback sacks, a fumble recovery, and broke up two passes. Sophomore linebacker Jason Anderson was credited with 14 tackles. Senior defensive back Roman Evans and sophomore Ray Abrams each intercepted a pass.

Minnesota State won for the second straight weekend, downing Saint Cloud State University, 35-21. T.J. Schraugnagel ran for 152 yards and five touchdowns.

QUARTERBACK Eric DeGraff was named co-player of the week on offense in the NCC. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior from Alleman, Iowa, completed 21 of 30 passes for 351 yards and three touchdowns in the Vikings' 42-14 win at Morningside.

VIKING CAPTAINS for the 2000 campaign are linebacker Derik Budig, quarterback Eric DeGraff, defensive lineman Joe Quinn, and offensive lineman Ryan Stadum.

SENIOR quarterback Eric DeGraff is Augustana's career leader in touchdown passes with 59. He is also the career leader in total offense (8,834), passing yards (8,251), pass completions (716), and passing attempts (1,195).

JUNIOR wide receiver Matt Holmlund holds the Augustana career record for touchdown receptions (24) and is the Vikings' career leader in receptions with 187. He has caught 12 touchdown passes this year to become the single season record holder. He needs 89 yards to tie the school record for receiving yards in a season. Jeff Rusk set the record of 1,063 in 1983.

Junior wide receiver Ryan Nodland has 151 career receptions.

IN THE NCC, Eric DeGraff is first in passing (254 yards a game), and first in total offense (273).

Matt Holmlund is first in receptions (42) and in receiving yards (112 a game). Ryan Nodland is second in receptions (26).

The Vikings are first in pass offense (274 yards a game), first in total offense (413), and first in first downs (101).

DeGraff's 351 passing yards against Morningside is the most among league quarterbacks this season. The Vikings' passing total of 374 against the Mustangs is a NCC team best.

JIM HEINITZ (60-77-1) is in his 13th season as Augustana's head coach. He was named North Central Conference Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1992. The 1992 season is among the most memorable in Augustana athletic history as the Vikings posted an 8-3 record after going winless in 1991. The South Dakota Sportswriters Association named Heinitz Men's College Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1992, and he was selected the Kodak College Coach of the Year in Region Four in 1988. Heinitz served three years as Augie's offensive line coach before being named head coach in 1985. He resigned to enter private business after the 1992 season, but returned to Augustana in January, 1996. In 1988 and 1989 Augustana made its only appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs. During the Heinitz years the Vikings have had three eight-win seasons. A two-time All-NCC linebacker at South Dakota State University, Heinitz coached football at the University of Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls Washington High School, Sioux Falls Lincoln High School, and Rapid City Stevens High School before coming to Augie.
