AUGUSTANA (6-3, 4-3 NCC) is on the road again this weekend.
On Saturday, November 4, the Vikings will be in Omaha, Neb., to battle sixth-ranked University of Nebraska-Omaha (8-1, 7-0). Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Caniglia Field.
Augie leads the North Central Conference in total offense, averaging 418 yards a game. The Mavericks lead the league in total defense, yielding 196 yards a game.
THE VIKINGS and Mavericks meet for the 25th time. UNO leads the series 14-10. A year ago at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls the Vikings rallied from a 24-14 halftime deficit to defeat the 18th-ranked Mavericks 31-24. Augie rolled up 528 yards to 463 for the Mavs. Viking quarterback Eric DeGraff completed 22 of 31 passes for 364 yards and three touchdowns. Shannon Poppinga intercepted two UNO passes to lead the Augie defense.
LAST WEEKEND the Vikings added red-shirt freshman Eric Haugland to their potent offense and the 6-foot-1, 172-pounder responded with three touchdown catches as the Vikings toppled the University of North Dakota 35-23 in Grand Forks. It was UND's first loss at home since 1998, and the last game played on Memorial Field. The Fighting Sioux are moving to an indoor stadium next season. The win was only the fourth for Augie in 26 games in Grand Forks.
Entering the game, Haugland had 10 receptions and no touchdowns. He caught seven against the Sioux for 144 yards and touchdowns covering 34, 12, and 58 yards. Quarterback Eric DeGraff completed 29 of 47 passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns. Augie's 421 yards of offense came against the No. 3-ranked defense in NCAA Division II. The Vikings had more yards at halftime (268) than UND had surrendered to any opponent in an entire game.
Defensively, Augustana held UND's running attack to 67 yards and standout junior running back Jed Perkerewicz to 35 yards in 17 attempts. Freshman linebacker Austin Flyger had seven unassisted tackles, one for a 14-yard loss. Sophomore lineman Nate Fluit had nine tackles, inlcuding two sacks for a loss of 10 yards. Roman Evans intercepted a pass, his sixth of the season.
Nebraska-Omaha remained undefeated in NCC play with a 24-7 win over South Dakota State University in Brookings.
AUGUSTANA senior quarterback Eric DeGraff was named co-offensive player of the week in the NCC after leading the Vikings past the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Going into the game, the Sioux were the top-ranked defense in Division II against the pass.
DeGraff completed 29 of 47 passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns. The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder is the NCC career leader in co mpletions with 628
AUGIE'S win over North Dakota was the first since the 1993 season when the Vikings defeated the Sioux 20-7. And the Vikings' current three-game winning streak is the longest since 1992 when they ran off five straight.

The South Dakota Sportswriters Association named Heinitz Men's College Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1992, and he was selected the Kodak College Coach of the Year in Region Four in 1988. Heinitz served three years as Augie's offensive line coach before being named head coach in 1985. He resigned to enter private business after the 1992 season, but returned to Augustana in January, 1996. In 1988 and 1989 Augustana made its only appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs. During the Heinitz years the Vikings have had three eight-win seasons. A two-time All-NCC linebacker at South Dakota State University, Heinitz coached football at the University of Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls Washington High School, Sioux Falls Lincoln High School, and Rapid City Stevens High School before coming to Augie.
