Augustana Hosts Forum On Cultural Understanding

SIOUX FALLS - Augustana College is hosting a forum entitled "Increasing Cultural Understandings" at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 30, in Kresge Auditorium.

The featured speaker is Dr. Rodolfo Chavez, assistant professor in the School of Education at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Chavez is a well known speaker in the areas of bilingual/multicultural education and parental involvement.

He will be working with students, faculty and community with a focus on the development of school/community partnerships that promote the empowerment of all children. Dr. Chavez will address community and family issues that we face as a multicultural society.

The forum, which is free and open to the public, is made possible by the South Dakota Humanities Council, Augustana College's Mellon Foundation, the Department of Education at Augustana, and South Dakota State University.

Dr. Chavez is the associate director of the BUENO Center for Multicultural Education at the University of Colorado. He has received the Colorado Statewide Parent Initiatives Award for Promotion and Support of Parental Initiatives, and the Colorado Parent Coalition Appreciation and Outstanding Service Award.

The purpose of the forum at Augustana is to increase cultural awareness and provide ideas and support for the development of community partnerships.
