Augustana Professor Receives National Recognition
SIOUX FALLS - Dr. Timothy Jones, associate professor of English
at Augustana College, has been selected from a national applicant
pool to attend one of 29 summer study opportunities supported by
the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The Endowment is a federal agency that each summer supports seminars
and institutes at colleges and universities so that teachers can
work in collaboration and study with experts in humanities disciplines.
Jones will participate in an institute entitled “Representations
of the 'Other': Jews in Medieval Christendom.” The five-week program
will be held at Oxford University's Centre for Hebrew and Jewish
Studies in England, and directed by Professor Irven M. Resnick.
The 25 teachers selected to participate in the program each receive
a stipend of $3,250 to help defray their travel, study, and living
expenses.
Jones has been teaching at Augustana since 1995. He has a bachelor's
degree from Calvin College, a master's degree in English and American
Literature from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in Old
and Middle English Literature from the University of Illinois.
Topics for the 29 seminars and institutes offered for college
and university teachers this summer include Civil Rights Movement,
British Romantic Fiction, the English Reformation, and major figures
such as Ralph Waldo Emerson. The approximately 500 teachers who
participate in these studies will teach over 30,000 American students
the following year.
