Workshop Focuses on Mathematics and Middle School Teachers

SIOUX FALLS - Representatives from Augustana College's education and mathematics departments will lead a workshop June 9-13 at Roosevelt High School designed to train middle school mathematics teachers in the use of portable, adaptable, and user-friendly technology in their classrooms.

Dr. John Clementson, associate professor of elementary education at Augustana, is the workshop director. He will be assisted by J. R. Smith, assistant professor of mathematics at Augustana, and Jeff Lukens and Bob Tower, teachers at Roosevelt High School.

The State of South Dakota Partnership Grant has provided a $49,950 grant to fund the project, which is titled, “Activity-Based Mathematics Across the Curriculum.”

This project focuses on the use of graphing calculators to improve mathematics knowledge, instruction, and student achievement. In addition, the workshop will train mathematics teachers in the newest interactive technologies for the graphing calculator and the worldwide web.

Participating are 25 middle-level educators from across South Dakota.
