Dr. Sandra Looney Recipient of Niebuhr Award

SIOUX FALLS - Dr. Sandra Looney, professor of English, received the Vernon and Mildred Niebuhr Faculty Excellence Award during Augustana College’s 2003 Commencement May 25 at the Sioux Falls Arena.

The annual award was established to recognize excellence in teaching. The award, provided by Dick Niebuhr, Aberdeen, S.D., who graduated from Augustana in 1966, is named in honor of his parents, Vernon and Mildred. The recipient receives $5,000.

A native of Montevideo, Minn., Dr. Looney graduated from Worthington High School in 1958. She attended Worthington Community College from 1958 to 1960, and received her bachelor’s degree from Augustana in 1962. She received her master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. She began teaching at Augustana in 1964.

In 1986 she received the Burlington Northern Excellence in Teaching Award and in 1996 was the recipient of the Frederick C. Kohlmeyer Distinguished Teaching Professorship.
