Rudy Giuliani Ninth Speaker in Boe Forum Series at Augustana
SIOUX FALLS - Rudy Giuliani, Time magazine's 2001 Person of the
Year, today was announced as the ninth speaker in the Boe Forum
Series at Augustana College.
Giuliani's presentation at 7:00 p.m. on March 18, 2004, in the
Elmen Center's Hall Sports Forum is sponsored by the Center for
Western Studies at Augustana.
In 1993 Giuliani was elected the 107th Mayor of New York City,
after a campaign focusing on quality of life, crime, business,
and education. In 1997 he was reelected by a wide margin, carrying
four out of New York City's five boroughs.
As mayor, Giuliani returned accountability to city government
and improved the quality of life for all New Yorkers. Under his
leadership, overall crime fell 65 percent, murder was reduced
by 70 percent, and New York City - once infamous around the world
for its dangerous streets - was recognized by the FBI as the
safest large city in America for the past five years. New York
City's law enforcement strategies have become models for other
cities around the world, particularly the CompStat program, which
won the 1996 Innovations in Government Award from the Kennedy
School of Government at Harvard University.
On September 11, 2001, America suffered the worst attack in its
history when terrorists crashed into the Twin Towers of the World
Trade Center. Thousands of New Yorkers were killed, including
hundreds of members of the city's uniformed services, who rushed
to the scene to lead the heroic rescue of tens of thousands of
people. Having narrowly missed being crushed when the Towers
fell, Mayor Giuliani immediately began leading the recovery of
the city as it faced its darkest hour. For his efforts, he was
named Person of the Year by Time magazine, knighted by the Queen
of England, dubbed Rudy the Rock by French President Jaques Chirac,
and former first lady Nancy Reagan presented him with the Ronald
Reagan Presidential Freedom Award.
Limited by New York City law to two terms as mayor, Giuliani
founded Giuliani Partners in January, 2002. His book, "Leadership,"
became an instant best seller when it was released in the fall
of 2002.
Previous Boe Forums have featured General Colin Powell, President
George H. Bush, President Mikhail Gorbachev, Prime Minister John
Major, Barbara Bush, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Queen Noor of Jordan,
Speaker Newt Gingrich, and PBS correspondent Susan Dentzer.
Giuliani's presentation at Augustana College is free and open
to the public. Tickets may be obtained by mail at no cost by
sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Center for
Western Studies, Box 727, Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD
57197. Tickets will be mailed on February 27. The box office
at the Center will open on March 4 and 5 for distribution of
the remaining tickets.
