SIOUX FALLS - Augustana College will honor Andy Zephier, Paula
U'Ren and the Boyens family during Viking Days 2003.
Zephier, Sioux Falls, will receive the Lefty Olson Award for
lifetime achievement in athletics and athletic administration.
U'Ren, Saint Cloud, Minn., is the recipient of the Ole Odney
Award for outstanding achievement in coaching by an Augustana graduate.
The Boyens family, Sioux Falls, will receive the Milt and Clara
Harvey Award for outstanding contributions of time, service, and
financial support to Viking athletics.
Zephier, U'Ren, and the Boyens will be honored at the Hall of
Fame Banquet on Friday, October 3, at the Holiday Inn City Centre
Starlite Room. Activities begin at 6:00 p.m. with a social hour.
For ticket information call the Augustana Booster Club at 274-5420.
Zephier, who graduated from Augustana in 1957, coached all sports
at Flandreau Indian School for 33 years. He assembled some of South
Dakota's best cross country teams, winning seven state high school
championships and registering four runner-up finishes. His 1962
track team won the state championship, ending Sioux Falls Washington's
nine-year domination of the crown. Zephier was inducted into the
South Dakota Coaches Hall of Fame in 1992 and he served as co-honorary
referee for the 2003 Howard Wood Dakota Relays.
U'Ren, who graduated from Augustana in 1995, was a three-time
selection to the All-North Central Conference softball team. She
has been the head softball coach at Saint Cloud State University
for the past six seasons and has compiled a 254-82 record. In 1998,
her rookie season, U'Ren guided the Huskies to their first NCC title.
Saint Cloud was the region runner-up in 2003 and set a school record
for wins with 46.
Augustana has been a second home for the Boyens family of Sioux
Falls. Loren and Sheila Boyens' three sons, Scott, Mark, and Craig,
all played football for the Vikings. Loren currently serves on the
Augustana Board of Regents. Family members have also been active
in the Booster Club, Fellows Cabinet, and Auxiliary. Scott Boyens
is an Augie team physician, while his wife, Beth, is the Augustana
Alumni Association president.
