Service Learning Trips a Spring Break Alternative
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Twenty-Seven Augustana students have selected
to participate in service learning trips during the college's spring
break, March 22-26.
Coordinated by the Augustana Chapel of Reconciliation, the students
are headed for Pine Ridge in South Dakota, Phoenix, Ariz., and Holden
Village in Washington.
At Pine Ridge, Augie students will be working on a Habitat for
Humanity House. They will stay at the retreat center in Pine Ridge,
become immersed in the native culture, spend time becoming familiar
with a weekend youth drop-in program, and visit the Oglala Lakota
College in Mission, S.D.
The group traveling to Phoenix will be working with Habitat for
Humanity in El Mirage, Ariz., the second poorest city in the state.
Currently 25 Habitat homes are under construction. Augustana alumni
living in the area have been invited to join the students.
Preparing the site for spring and summer guests is the objective
for the Holden Village group. The Augie students will also enjoy
hiking, snowshoeing, and retreating in the Cascade Mountains.
