Nebraska Poet to Speak at Augustana

SIOUX FALLS – William Kloefkorn, former poet laureate of Nebraska, speaks at Augustana College on Wednesday, April 27.

Kloefkorn’s presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Reconciliation on the Augustana campus. This reading is free and open to the public. His appearance is sponsored in part by the Augustana Mellon Fund.

Kloefkorn was named the Nebraska State Poet in 1982. He is a retired professor of English at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln.

He is the author of many collections of poetry. The most recent include the newly reprinted Alvin Turner as Farmer (Logan House, 2004), Sunrise, Dayglow, Sunset, Moon (Talking River Publications, 2004), and Walking the Campus (Lone Willow Press, 2004). He has also published two memoirs – This Death by Drowning (University of Nebraska Press, 2001) and Restoring the Burnt Child (University of Nebraska Press, 2003). He is the author of two collections of short fiction, A Time to Sink Her Pretty Little Ship (Logan House Press, 1999) and Shadow Boxer (Logan House Press, 2003).

Kloefkorn’s poems have appeared in Prairie Schooner, Georgia Review, Poet & Critic, and elsewhere. In addition to his many publications and honors, he won first-place in the 1978 Nebraska Hog-Calling Championship.

In addition to his presentation, Kloefkorn will visit Dr. Patrick Hicks’s creative writing class.
