Augustana Alumni Brass Choir in Concert at Central Lutheran

The Augustana Alumni Brass Choir, under the direction of Harold “Doc” Krueger, will be in concert at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Central Lutheran Church , 333 South 12 th Street in Minneapolis . A reception follows the concert.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The ensemble will also be playing at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship services.

Krueger is a recent recipient of the South Dakota Governor's Awards in the Arts for Outstanding Service in Arts Education. He came to Augustana College in 1965 as associate conductor of bands and assistant professor of music. He achieved the rank of full professor in 1973, and in 1989 received the Burlington Northern Foundation faculty achievement award for outstanding college teaching.

While at Augustana he organized the Brass Choir, which has earned both a national and international reputation for excellence. The ensemble toured Europe in 1977, 1981, 1985, 1989, and 1993. In 1970, 1983, and 1988 the Augustana Brass Choir was invited to play for the prestigious New York Brass Conference.

Krueger, who became chair of the Augustana music department, retired in 1993 after 28 years of teaching, conducting, and performing. He is currently conducting the Sioux Empire Brass in Sioux Falls . His citation at the Governor's Awards in the Arts included the following: “Dr. Krueger has been an outstanding mentor and model of excellence in leadership with his own students and with music educators across the region. His insights into the importance of arts education have helped shape education policy and practice. Harry Krueger is a living legend in music education, direction and performance who has touched and changed the lives of thousands of students.”

Krueger is a graduate of Luther College and received the prestigious Dr. Carlo A. Sperati Award given in memory of the man who started the Luther Concert Band in 1972.
