Dr. Geoffrey Dipple Appointed Chair of Moral Values

SIOUX FALLS – Dr. Geoffrey Dipple, associate professor of history, has been appointed chair of the Stanley L. Olsen Chair of Moral Values.

Dipple, currently serving as chair of the history department, joined the Augustana faculty in the fall of 1998. He came to Augustana from Erindale College, University of Toronto, where he was an assistant professor. He has also taught at Queen’s University and the University of Ottawa. His scholarly area of interest is the Protestant Reformation.

He received his bachelor’s degree in history at Valparaiso, and his master’s and Ph.D. from Queen’s University.

The Chair of Moral Values is named in memory of Stanley L. Olsen, professor of philosophy at Augustana, who embodied and exemplified in his teaching the spirit that the Chair seeks to sustain and promote. The task of the holder of the Chair is to provide leadership in the areas of ethics and moral values by challenging the campus community to confront questions of value.

The three-year appointment is awarded to a tenured associate or full professor who enjoys a reputation for being an excellent teacher and scholar, and who has a personal and scholarly interest in questions of meaning and value. The Chair holder receives a summer stipend and a reduced teaching load during the fall and spring semesters.
