Lacey Horkey, Jason Dybsetter recipients of Covenant Awards

SIOUX FALLS – Lacey Horkey from Heron Lake, Minn., and Jason Dybsetter from Yankton, S.D., have been selected to receive Augustana Covenant Awards for 2004-2005.

Horkey received the award for Excellence and Dybsetter was selected to receive the award for Service. The Augustana Covenant Awards were established to reward students who exhibit the College’s five core values – Christian, Liberal Arts, Excellence, Community, Service. Candidates are nominated by faculty, staff, and other students.

Horkey is a junior majoring in English and journalism. Her extracurricular activities include participating in Band and Flute Choir, tutoring in the Writing Center, co-instructing a karate class, working as an instructor with the Sioux Falls Figure Skating Association, performing in Viking Varieties, and writing for Augustana Today and etc, Sioux Falls.

“I don’t want to be remembered as someone who let life and its amazing opportunities pass by,” Horkey told Laura Hibma of The Mirror, Augustana’s student newspaper. “I am passionate about each activity I am involved in and work to make a positive difference.”

“Excellence defines every aspect of her life,” said Cheryl Jackson, instructor in the English Department at Augustana. “She is dedicated to improving her personal academic skills, and sets high standards for herself. Moreover, she displays a willingness to change. She is also encouraging and compassionate with other people. Most importantly, she is determined.”

Lacey is the daughter of Linda and Michael Horkey of Heron Lake.

Dybsetter is a senior majoring in biology and religion. He has devoted much of his time helping Dr. Anna Madsen, assistant professor of religion at Augustana, whose son, Karl, was seriously injured in a car-pedestrian accident. Dybsetter has also cared for Madsen’s daughter, Else.

“I’m like part of the family now, so to be recognized for doing this is great,” Dybsetter told Karyn Schubert of The Mirror. “But I don’t feel like I’m doing anything exceptional. I love those kids, I love the family.”

Dybsetter has worked as a lifeguard and is employed at Children’s Care Hospital in Sioux Falls. He is the son of Joan and Gary Dybsetter of Yankton.

Both Horkey and Dybsetter are Dean’s List students at Augustana.
