Hearst Foundation Grants Additional Scholarship Support
SIOUX FALLS - The William Randolph Hearst Foundation has awarded Augustana College a $100,000 grant for scholarships for students preparing to enter education, public or human service, or journalism professions. Scholarship recipients must also demonstrate financial need.
The Foundation made its first grant of $100,000 to the William Randolph Hearst Scholarship Endowment at Augustana in 1983, and a second grant of $100,000 was awarded in 1999. The Hearst Endowment has generated much-needed scholarship support for Augustana students, providing 175 scholarships to date totaling $173,010. With this additional grant, the College will be able to award five more scholarships for a total of 15 scholarships each year with an average award of $1,125.
The Hearst Foundations (including the William Randolph Hearst Foundation and the Hearst Foundation, Inc.) are among the 100 largest in the nation. Its goal is to “support efforts that ensure students access to a quality education.”
Augustana President Rob Oliver said, “The Hearst Foundation’s endowment has been instrumental to this campus for more than 25 years, providing critical scholarship support to our students, 70 percent of whom receive need-based financial aid. We are so grateful to the Foundation to be able to extend the impact of the Hearst endowment by awarding five additional scholarships a year.”
