Q. When does the Tobacco-Free Policy go into effect?
A. Augustana University’s Tobacco-Free Policy became effective on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017.

Q. Who does the policy apply to?
A. The policy applies to all faculty, staff, students, clients, contractors and visitors during and after campus hours.

Q. What tobacco products are included in the policy?
A. Augustana’s Tobacco-Free Policy covers cigarettes, cigars, pipes, all forms of smokeless tobacco, clove cigarettes and any other smoking devices that use tobacco such as hookahs, or those simulate the use of tobacco, such as electronic cigarettes.

Q. What areas does the Tobacco-Free Policy cover?
A. The policy applies to all Augustana property including, but not limited to:

  • Outdoor: All University sidewalks, parking lots, landscaped areas and recreational areas. This includes the parking lot located next to the Sioux Falls Seminary building and across the street from the Administration building, the Elmen Center parking lot, and the parking lots outside of the Madsen Center, Froiland Science Complex, Humanities Center, Nelson Service Building and all residence halls.
  • Indoor: All University buildings, residences and dormitories.

The policy also applies to all University-owned or leased vehicles.

Q. Will there be a designated smoking and tobacco use area on campus?
A.  After much consideration, there will be NO designated smoking or tobacco use area on campus. Smoking and tobacco use will be permitted outside the perimeter of campus.

Q. Can I smoke and use tobacco in my personal vehicle while it is parked on campus?
A. Yes. Smoking and tobacco use is permitted in private vehicles parked on the AU campus however, cigarette butts and/or other tobacco remnants should be disposed of properly.


Q. What resources are available to help me if I want to quit using tobacco?
A. For those who need it, information regarding nicotine replacement products such as gum, lozenges or patches, may be obtained at the Campus Clinic (located in the lower level of Solberg Hall), your physician's office, or SDQuitline.com.


Q. Where can I learn more about the policy?
A. View the entire policy online at augie.edu/tobacco. As we prepare to implement this policy, we’ll be reaching out to share resources designed to help end tobacco addiction. On campus, we will install and update signage to ensure the campus community, vendors, visitors and contractors are aware of our Tobacco-Free Policy. We will also remove all smoking receptacles currently located near campus doorways.
