Faculty Development Grant

Augustana Internship Centers
Update
9 Nov 2003
[Also visit the Augustana Career
Center.]
Within the current Faculty Development grant, one of the
six overall emphases is entitled: Internships and the Expression
of Liberal Thinking.
Click on these links for Summary
concept, and for proposal Details (3a).
In addition, for convenient reference, an
unofficial copy of the current version of the Registrar's Internships form
is available here (as of Nov
2003). [If you need to get the free Adobe
Reader first, click here.]
However students should obtain an official printed copy from the Registrar's
Office.
As indicated in the Summary,
Augustana wishes to provide as many diverse undergraduate experiences as
possible within a real-life application of liberal learning and vocational
interest. These internship centers would also trigger faculty development
in the sense of using distance learning methods and technologies to support
the students while they are at the internship site.
From the Details (3a)
link: By the end of the project, the college will develop at least five
internship centers at various places around the country. These centers
will be integrated into the College's funding capability by the end of
the third year. Recruit 3 alumni in each geographical area, orient team,
and place 2-5 students in each center per year.
Of the locations mentioned, we are proceeding initially
with Denver, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Chicago. San Francisco and Washington,
DC are likely next steps as we move toward developing at least five internship
centers at various places around the country, within the three years of
the grant.

Students
How to get started in pursuing an Internship in this program
The recommended procedure (current draft) grows out of suggestions from
one of our Alumni steering committee members. This procedure will be updated
periodically. In getting started, please become thoroughly familiar with
this web site and with the Registrar's Internships
form.
1. The student "applies for the program" by contacting the
Faculty Development Coordinator (currently Arlen
Viste), or the Dean of the College.
2. This application entails turning in a resumé and writing a letter
of intent (indicating the student's top five or ten interests in an internship).
3. The student either chooses an internship that is listed on this web
site or through links within it, or agrees to be paired with a professional
(Alumni contact) in one of the internship metro area communities.
4. The Alumni Contact receives the resumé and application from the
Faculty Development Coordinator and makes contact with the student by e-mail
and/or phone.
5. The Alumni Contact is interested in helping the student make connections
in the business world, and not simply in magically "getting them an
internship." This means that the Alumni Contact will be interested
and very helpful, but the final responsibility is the student's.
6. A plan is set for the time and manner in which the Alumni Contact and
the student will move forward.
7. The student picks up the Internships form
from the Registrar's Office, works with her/his Academic Advisor and selects
an Internship Advisor, notes deadlines, and files the forms within those
deadlines.
8. The Faculty Development Coordinator is kept fully informed as the process
develops, through such means as CC: in e-mail.
The Alumni Contact, the Faculty Development Coordinator, and the student's
Academic Advisor and Internship Advisor will work with the student as she/he
develops plans for the Internship, but it is the student's Internship.
