The Relief Association for Southern Sudan USA, Inc., is a humanitarian Relief agency. It provides the humanitarian assistance to South Sudanese displaced people inside and outside Sudan.

RASS was initially established and found in 1992 by South Sudanese scholars in Nairobi Kenya to alleviate the suffering of south Sudanese Christians and non-Christians who have been displaced by civil war.

It has been the ambition of RASS to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance for the needy efficiently and effectively regardless of race, color, religious, and gender since its inception 1992.

South Sudanese Immigrants reestablished RASS USA in 1997,purposely to address the cause of poverty, effect of conflict & war, natural disaster and to educate American Christian Communities about the civil war in Sudan.

Ø Background:

Sudan is an Africa largest country, which has ranged by over forty-five years of civil war. The country's civil war sparked in 1955 before its independence in 19956 from Great Britain. Over two (2) million people have died mostly children from a devastating combination of war, diseases and widespread of famine.

The civil war has forced many women and children out from their homes and villages to escape immense and certain death. The current civil war has made direct effects of displacement, lack of education, health, hunger, diseases, natural disasters, floods and drought.

About four million South Sudanese have been internally displaced and thousand of others have fled the country. The Sudan civil war has destroyed not only civil and traditional values, but also social structures. South Sudanese population has been become increasingly with widows, orphans, elderly and disabled people.

The United Nation and several non-governmental organizations launched a major relief campaign to South Sudan entitled "Operation Lifeline Sudan" in the late 1980s.

The campaign provided some precious respite from the war, but was eventually overrun by renewed fighting. However, those non-governmental agencies, which participated in the operation, have still maintained some connections with the Sudan.

Since 1992, RASS has been concentrating on its mission, purpose, and philosophy to assist coordinating development and relief activities of local and international NGOS working in the South Sudan.

Ø Mission Statement:

RASS Mission Statement is to be the spotlight on humanitarian assistance, to alleviate the suffering of South Sudanese grass root people, and to promote educational development in South Sudan.

Ø Purpose:

1. To focus on relief aids and to collect relief supplies in kind to support the life of displaced South Sudanese Communities inside and outside of Sudan.

2. To support emergency relief, household food security, primary health care, and education programs in the South Sudan.

3. To facilitate resettlement and rehabilitation program for immigrants and displaced families.

4. To foster socio-economic development through mobilization of local and international resources in abroad and home.

5. To networking with other agencies to improve its capacity and the commitment to enhance their effectiveness in relief and development programs.

6. To promote peace, unity and cultural activities among South Sudanese Community.

7. To establish its local branches offices where necessary in the United States and Canada.

8. To conduct the friendship with the Christian communities in the USA, Canada, Europe and Africa to support efforts to increase humanitarian operation and building capacity.

9. To conduct conferences, workshops, and seminaries to educate churches, non-governmental organizations and voluntary organizations in the USA, and other countries. Ø Philosophy:

1. Neutrality and transparency in its operation.

2. Guaranteeing the right to humanitarian assistance for the need regardless of their political, religious, ethnic or gender divides or believes.

3. Proportionality of the aids and assistance according to the needs.

4. Accountability to the beneficiaries and donors.

5. Advocating proactively and reactively the humanitarian principles of the Geneva conventions and the UN convention on the right of child.

6. Strengthening the community by increasing and building its capacity.

7. Promoting ongoing management strategic plans to scope with the changes.

Ø Issues:

1. To engage and to improve in its operation to distribute humanitarian relief food, medical and other materials.

2. To scope with general situation and to ensure observance of ground rules for UN Security Protocol, and other humanitarian agreements in South Sudan.

3. To implement the need for effective coordination of the relief efforts in South Sudan and it's surrounding areas.

4. To sign agreements and letters of understanding with UN/NGOs and other international agencies to promote mutual relations in South Sudan.

5. To protect and to safeguard the UN/NGOs personnel and properties in association with community and local authority concerned in South Sudan.

6. To share humanitarian workshops and forums with other counterparts operating under Operation Lifeline Sudan (OLS) in South Sudan

Ø Strategic Achievement:

1. It has made substantial programs for delivery of food, medical, shelter to needy in Sudan.

2. It has established an effective delivery operation with the international agencies in Sudan

3. It has conducted a comprehensive Management strategic training for field operations and staff.

4. It has established a quarterly workshop/Seminary programs in South Sudan.

Ø SWOT Analysis:

1. To increase distribution capability in South Sudan liberated areas for the needy.

2. To strengthen the financial accountability and to provide ongoing financial management.

3. To increasing fundraising efforts, project capacities, and seminaries consecutively.

4. To operate effectively in South Sudan liberated areas and its surrounding areas.

5. To provide ongoing field training in South Sudan for adequate operation of food distribution and to increase management and staff training.

6. To promote physical and mental work performances for remuneration so as to exert the efforts necessary to accomplish a particular RASS work related-function in the field and its offices in the USA and in the South Sudan.

7. To develop internal personal and to accelerate the selection of training outside people for further management positions.

Ø Evaluating Alternative:

RASS can be engaged on its operation, development and food distribution, medical, staff training for evaluating alternative strategies. It can demonstrate the tasks identifying problems and to create techniques in generating alternative to be in place.

Ø Strategic Choice:

To focus on penetration by building new RASS distribution centers where needed in South Sudan and to concentrated on implementation and integration of existent projects.
