THE JOSEPH W. YEDLICKA AWARDS
In Recognition of Superior Achievement in the Study of the French Language and Literature.
The awards are given in memory of Joseph W. Yedlicka, former President and Executive-Director of Pi Delta Phi. Dr. Yedlicka was a tireless promoter of Pi Delta Phi and advocate for the study of French language and literature. The scholarships named in his honor are designed to enable undergraduate regular members of an active chapter to continue their studies of French Language and Literature. There are several awards among which are:
- Full tuition summer session scholarship--seven weeks including housing, half-board and some additional living expenses--awarded by: The American University of Paris and Pi Delta Phi
- Full tuition summer scholarship--five weeks including housing and board--to Aix-en-Provence awarded by: The Institute of American Universities
- Full tuition summer scholarship--five weeks including housing and board--to Aix-en-Provence partially funded by the National Dean's List with Pi Delta Pi
The above awards are accompanied by A Pi Delta Phi Travel Grant of up to $1,500 to help cover transportation costs for one round-trip ticket from the U.S. to the host site only; the travel stipend does not cover additional or post summer session travel.
- Full tuition summer-session scholarship--five weeks--awarded by Pi Delta Phi to the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi.
ELIGIBILITY
- Current regular member of an active Pi Delta Phi chapter who has not previously received a Pi Delta Phi scholarship; students who have not been inducted into the Society prior to the application deadline are not eligible.
- Currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate field of study.
- U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
- Preference is given to applicants who have not previously studied in a Francophone country.
- Preference is also based on financial need and lack of opportunity.
APPLICATION MATERIALS REQUIRED
- The Yedlicka Scholarships Application Form signed by the Chapter Moderator.
- Letter by the applicant in English or French stating clearly and briefly his or her qualifications. Applicants must address financial need and lack of opportunity, must address any previous study abroad, and must state that they are able to accept an award for summer study (five-to-seven weeks).
- Three letters of nomination; the third recommendation (or second recommendation in the case where the Moderator is also recommending as a teacher) may be from a professor in another discipline. If the Moderator is also a professor of French recommending as a teacher, he/she should indicate that the letter serves both capacities. The Moderator must attest that the candidate is willing and able (physically and psychologically) to travel and to study abroad, and that the candidate meets all eligibility requirements.

DATES AND DEADLINES
- Nov. 15application deadline including all of the above materials (postmarked no later than Nov. 15); FAXED applications not accepted.
- Feb. 16scholarship winners will be informed.
- Sept. 1scholarships winners are required to submit a report about their study abroad experience and thank you letter in writing to the Executive Director.
