"April Fool!" It was always a fund
day, and one filled with surprises. There was a long-standing
tradition in my family: we siblings would try and pull pranks on
each other the first day in April. Some of the pranks were funny
and others displayed our collective gullibility.
Scandia Lutheran get the opportunity to
celebrate the entry of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem with shouts of
"Hosanna!" on April 1st. This is no joke, nor is it a
prank to get others to laugh... It is serious business. The
Son of God made flesh in Christ has come to the city for you. His
love affair with you has been long-lasting, and he's not through with
his love for you on Palm Sunday. We will share in the Lord's
Supper together on Maundy Thursday with our First Communion
celebrants to remember Jesus' love for us in his flesh and blood.
And on Good Friday, we will mourn the loss of this God made flesh as we
remove the altar clothes from our sanctuary and darken our halls and our
hearts once more - Jesus has taken our sins upon himself out of HIS
perfect love for you.
Rest assured: it is also no prank
that on Easter Sunday, we celebrate the empty tomb - this is no magic
trick or slight of hand prank. It is Jesus' victory over the
darkens. It is a time for us to be joyous in the Lord - the one
who comes to free us from sin, death, and the devil. He Lives!
and because he lives, we are assured of everlasting life in HIM.
We will joyously be April Fools for
Christ this year as we sing "Alleluia" once again!
Shalom,
