Our Savior's
Lutheran Church is located approximately 6 miles straight
south of Menno,
South Dakota in the
James River
Valley.
Church History
It was in 1946
that a decision was made to build Our Savior's Lutheran
Church, a joint
effort of two smaller congregations.
(The James
River Congregation was organized in 1871, those pioneers
completed building
their church in 1885, located one mile east of Our
Savior's.
The Norway Congregation, was organized in 1889 and their
building was
completed in 1899, located 1 mile west of Our Savior's.)
The project
of gathering rocks for the new church began in February 1948
with the cornerstone
laid in October of that year. The rocks were collected from
nearby fields and split by hand with stone hammers. The mortar was
mixed by hand
and carried to the mason. Most of the labor was volunteered by church
members. The lovely stone church in the James River Valley was completed
in January of 1950. The church is 70'x30', it seats 200 people in the sanctuary
and 40 in the balcony, the parlor will seat 110.
