The Rev. David B. Zellmer was called to serve as the third Bishop of the South Dakota Synod at the synod's annual assembly in June 2007. His six-year term of office began September 1, 2007. Previous to this call, Bishop Dave was Senior Pastor of Lutheran Memorial Church, Pierre, South Dakota, and Grace Lutheran Church, Hayes, South Dakota, for 14 years. Bishop Dave and his wife, LaDonna, are currently in the process of moving to Sioux Falls.

As bishop, he is responsible for the oversight and well-being of the 253 congregations of this synod as well as the pastors and other leaders who serve them. He represents the synod at many special occasions in pastors' and congregations' lives--anniversaries, dedications, installations, and more. He also represents this synod in ecumenical settings and, as one of the 65 bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, in formal ELCA capacities as well. Much of Bishop Dave's time will be spent "on the road"--or, in his case, "in the air" as a licensed pilot.
