Dear Members of Trinity;
Last night I attended the informational community meeting sponsored by the Institute for Healing Racism at St. Josephs Indian School. The presenters mentioned that Chamberlain is the first community that has had a community group formed after the training to address the issue of racism. They were pleased not only for the formation of the group but the continued interested shown and the opportunity to train a second group of community members.
Last Saturday our SD Synod multi-cultural committee met at Trinity. In the afternoon the 30+ churches in South Dakota located on or near a reservation were invited to attend a Talking Table meeting lead by the synod staff. Only a handful of the churches were represented. I disagreed with some of the assumptions made by our synod staff. One was that the Lutheran churches on or near the reservations are islands of white in the midst of Native American with little or no interaction between the races.
I mention these two meetings because both of them are concerned about the issue of racism. Racism is prevalent in our state. I could give all kinds of examples of the racism my son Joel encountered growing up in South Dakota. That would serve little purpose. Instead more time and effort needs to be directed toward forming relationships between people which can help to overcome racism.
After the meeting on Saturday I was upset with the statements that the Synod staff had made. As a response I started to list all the things that are happening at Trinity, in our community and school that are helping to develop closer relationship between our two cultures. Below is the list I came up with for Trinity:
· Membership is over 10% non white
· About 1/3 of students (pre-school 6th) attending Wed. night education hours are non-white
· Native American community members have rented our fellowship hall for rummage sales
· Treehouse Preschool that meets at Trinity has native American students enrolled
· Trinity members are teaching at tribal schools on Rosebud, Lower Brule and Crow Creek reservation as well as St. Joseph Indian School and Lower Brule Community College
· Trinity supervised and helped to support a Lutheran intern at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church at Lower Brule for at least 5 years during the 90s.
· Trinity members have volunteered on the last two Habitat for Humanity Houses built on the Crow Creek Reservation
As most of you know every year during November I try to come up with one thing for which I am especially thankful for. At the top of the list this year would be the community of Chamberlain. I am thankful for those who are working toward better relationships and understanding between the different races and cultures of people living in Chamberlain and the surrounding communities. Racism is prevalent throughout our state but our community is ahead of most in the state in addressing and combating racism. For that we can all be thankful.
Your friend in Christ,
Pastor Duane

In honor of our Veterans on Nov. 11th, the Noisy Offering for November will donated to Operation Happy Note. Operation Happy Note is a volunteer effort to send musical instruments to deployed service men and women throughout the world. With the help of thousands of Americans they have now sent over 3,500 instruments, including guitars, mandolins, banjos, violins, harmonicas and accessories since March of 2005. The Noisy Offering will help pay the shipping cost to send donated instruments to deployed service men and women.
FOOD PANTRY NEWS
The Food Pantry is very much in need for any items. Things like Spaghetti and tomatoe sauce make good meal starters. Canned vegetables (except green beans) and canned soups are low. With the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays coming items for holiday dinners would be very useful.
